Grouper Requirements

To manage groups in Grouper you will need:

  • a myNEU login
  • the link to Grouper
  • admin privileges for the group or folder you would like to modify

Grouper naming and nesting conventions

Folders and groups should be organized hierarchically. Follow the DRS/Northeastern graph to create new folders and groups. For example, to create a new group for a research group in the Department of English, first make sure there is a folder for the College of Social Sciences and Humanities and a folder for the Department of English, then create a research group in the Department of English folder.

Every Grouper folder and group is assigned a name and an ID. Grouper names and IDs should:

  • be descriptive and succinct
  • be lower case
  • use underscores between words

See a the Grouper spreadsheet for a list of active Grouper groups and folders.

Creating Folders

Under the My tools menu, click Explore

Starting from the Root folder, open the drs folder

You may create a new folder under drs, or you may navigate to a child folder

Click Create folder from the Manage folders box

Follow the Grouper naming conventions to create an appropriate folder name and ID

Add a description for the folder

Click Save and return

Once a new folder has been created, add it to the Grouper spreadsheet

Under the My tools menu, click Explore

Starting from the Root folder, open the drs folder

Navigate to the folder where you would like to add a group, or create a new folder in drs

Click Create Group from the Manage folders box

Follow the Grouper naming conventions to create an appropriate group name and ID

Add a description for the Group

Select the appropriate privileges to assign to everyone in the group (typically, only "read" and "view" should be selected)

Leave the Select group types "grouperLoader" option unchecked.

Click save

Once a new Group has been created, add it to the Grouper spreadsheet

Adding a user to Group

Under the My Tools menu, click Explore Navigate to the Group to which you would like to add a user Click Add members Enter the user's UID in the search box (this is most often the user's email name, i.e. sj.sweeney) Uncheck any users you don't want to add to the group Select the privileges you would like to assign the user for the Grouper group (this only applies to the Grouper group - it does not grant privileges in the DRS) Click "Assign privileges" Continue to add users as needed.

Viewing your groups

Under the My enrollment menu, click My memberships In the Browse or List groups box, click "List my groups"
