TAPAS presentation

  • New site! Launched in beta form a few weeks ago, coming out of beta soon.
  • You can view projects, collections, and records
  • Based partially on the TEI boilerplate - nicely formatted, based partially on markup
  • Different view and stylesheet options, metadata available, associated files
  • Other stream is as a contributor - anyone with an account can upload tei, metadata, configure records, projects, collections
  • search is still in process, but getting there
  • We want to add visualization and analysis tools in the future
  • What is a useful view of all records? Adding list and grid options, toggle-able

Community side of TAPAS:

  • User forums, for people to talk about tech issues and encoding issues.
  • Working groups: shared research/interest - get forums but also get projects, or assist in developing grant proposals, etc
  • TAPAS Learn: data clinics, workshops, themed events (like when new features are released)
  • Components get put together - drupal, theme, hydra, fedora, eXist, handles XML parsing, getting all those pieces to politely communicate is one of the biggest challenges.
  • Many architectural similarities between things like this and SHARP
  • Difference between toolkit and drupal: both content management systems, wordpress is plug and play, drupal is meant to have a developer, it's more of a kit or framework than a premade system.
  • Beta was received very pleasantly - positive tweets, retweets.

Bahare is back from her conference.

  • It was in Vermont Northeast Arc User group.
  • GIS in humanities education is a pretty hot topic.
  • Cool presentation - book called "Abstract Machine - Humanities GIS"
  • Presenter talked about how we can map emotional patterns.
  • Also went to some technical workshops

New software that may displace neatline - Story Maps, which is free

  • What is the status of Story Maps - what does Esri do to keep it alive (scholarly permanence)
  • May eventually be offered as part of our GIS services.

Snellebration debrief- we want to be a little more gripping

  • Maybe collab with archive in the future? Add things that are contributable, but still substantive.

Podio -

  • 64 people over the semester for consults
  • We can now link consults to projects.
  • What is a workshop vs. a class or consult? It mostly has to do with whether it was open to the public or not.
