Spring Texts For our spring publication to WWO, planned to coincide with Women's History Month in March, we will be doing a thematic collection of texts focused on instruction and education. The texts we will prioritize for this spring will be:

  • Favell (Lee) Mortimer, The History of Job
  • Jane Bowdler, Poems and Essays
  • Sarah Trimmer, Fabulous Histories
  • Harriet Cheney, A Peep at the Pilgrims
  • Priscilla Wakefield, Mental Improvement
  • Maria Edgeworth, The Little Dog Trusty, The Orange Man, and The Cherry Orchard
  • Melesina Trench, Thoughts of a Parent on Education
  • Mary Leapor, Poems upon Several Occasion, Vol. 2

As you know, we also have quite a lot of Davies texts on deck, a few of which have potentially interesting links with the topic of instruction (such as From the Lady Eleanor, Her Blessing to Her Beloved Daughter and Ezekiel the Prophet Explained).

Most of the above texts are fairly far along in the publication process (which is why we picked this theme), but the Trench and the Edgeworth are a bit behind the others, so they'll need some extra attention if we're going to have them ready with the rest. Without disrupting your various other WWP responsibilities, please make these texts a priority in your work over the next few weeks.

Use of @type with <quote> Following up on our earlier conversation about close allusions/references that aren't quite direct quotes, we've decided to pilot adopting a value of "paraphrase" on @type for <quote>. Syd has already updated the schema to reflect this change. Since this is a pilot, please bring any cases where you think this encoding might be appropriate to our weekly meetings so we can discuss them as a group. As we discussed earlier, we're expecting to use this encoding largely for text that is renditionally distinct, but if you do happen to note any un-marked cases of reference/allusion, please gather those as well. It will be useful to have some examples to discuss so we can refine our encoding and establish a threshold for when this encoding is appropriate.

New Ideas Board The Ideas board is up and running on Trello; please add any ideas you might want to share, using the labels and adding yourself as a member on any idea card you create.

Errors in rendition We closed out the meeting by talking about cases where rendition itself is erroneous; we're going to explore how best to handle these cases and if you encounter any such issues, please send them to me. If you can think of any concrete fake examples we might experiment with, please send those as well.
